A long overdue and extensive update [Jan. 9th, 2008|04:02 am]
[Current Mood | pleased]
[Current Music |Orange Juice - Consolation Prize]

I write to you from Tennessee for what could very feasibly be my last time. I depart from Knoxville's McGhee-Tyson Airport at 6:18 p.m. today for a two-month residency in New York City with Scholastic Publishers. On Sunday 9 March I will return to Tennessee, only to flee to Chicago the following weekend for a weekend in Chicago to see the Magnetic Fields four times in two days. On Wednesday 26 March, I fly Virgin Atlantic on a one-way ticket to London, England.

As you can see, a load of shit has happened since I last asked you for your addresses. To compensate, I've compiled a most impressive summary of 2007's notable events (with pictures!). Please enjoy.

Who doesn't love pictures? Trust me, you want to read this! )

Drnxxxgvng Report [Nov. 24th, 2006|07:10 am]

[Current Mood | thankful]
[Current Music |The Smiths - Hand in Glove]

The Life Pursuit is the only thing I could listen to today while making my various rounds at family gatherings. It's briney hopefulness and sweeping openness made the bucolic drives around Morristown (including my pit stop at Jarnigan Cemet'ry to wish a Happy Nationalistic Day of Bloodshed to the familially deceased) particularly bittersweet.

Between hanging out on the new improved Susong party deck (no pool any longer; new GIANT hot tub) and cooking the turkey all by myself (it was perfect, thanks for asking), I would say that this is by far and wide the best Drnxxxgvng I've had. Lunch was pretty hysterical at the retirement home with my Great Gran who is 87 and should, by all accounts, be dead by now. Yet she trucks on! I'm going to live forever based on the ages for my still-living great grandparents (3 great grandmothers and one great grandfather; all over the age of 86). My Poppo and Uncle Mickey made sure to give me a hell of a hard time over lunch about staying in school an extra semester, but it was all in good fun considering that I'm going to be the most technically successful person on that side of the family in about 3 years. Sweet. Instead of having a ginormous family gathering with my father's entire side of the family (hyper-conservative right-wing Southern Baptists, all; there is an uncle with whom I haven't spoken since the 2000 elections), it was just me, mom, dad, Mamaw, and Papaw for dinner; it was really awesome because I never get to see them anymore.

Now I'm back in Knoxville with a sleepy Scraggles on my lap, enjoying a delicious Miller Lite before smoking a giant bowl of THNX. 2006, you have been a pretty wild year so far. Let's see what tomorrow night brings into my life...

[Current Music |The Smiths - Cemetry Gates]

"Barbarism Begins at Home" has a bass line that goes all buckwild playful from 6:40 - 6:45, and I swear to God, I don't know why I wasn't born in the late 70s. Dear Smiths: I love you.

In highly related news, I am flying to London on May 13, 2007 and will return June 3, 2007. Tickets are only $1052 for extra folks (I'm using some frequent flyer milez). That's three weeks of European goodness: London, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Dublin, Edinburgh. Are you trying to come? I can seat you in my plane if you let me know before Thanxxxgiving.

In highly unrlated news, I'm off to do 3 weeks' worth of laundry. Egads!

When I am a teacher, you will not be able to pay me money to assign group projects. Let this journal entry stand as a reminder in the infinity that is the internet: group projects suck balls. I am goddamned tired of being placed at the helm of America's slackiest-slackers. I henceforth refuse to ever be a group project leader, and if a fkkn teacher ever, ever, gives me this task again, so help me God, I will kick him or her in the FACE.

In other news, I've now been awake for 32 hours. You can just go ahead and kill me, if you want.

A While Ago and Recently [Nov. 12th, 2006|11:16 am]
[Current Location |Im bett]
[Current Mood | nerdy]
[Current Music |Underworld - Born Slippy]

A While Ago: Eric and I split up f'reals this time. Things have been hard-going, but the waves of time have softened the hard edges of love gone wrong. I started working a second job at Mocha Cabana as a barista, and I use the extra $30 a week to facilitate my weekend binge drinking. I keep making plans to come visit Nashvile, the likes of which I haven't seen since July, but work and school prevail and keep me away. It is probably for the best, you see, because my heart would simply break if I had to leave those lovely Nashvillains one more time. Scraggles has gotten huge. I started drinking coffee. My hair is black and blue.

Recently: I've had plenty of time to attend to school work, but I've spent those extra hours either asleep or drunkenly socializing. Mainly the latter. Or the former due to the latter. My immersion in academia births an ago old alcoholism in me. Hopefully this will subside after all 5 of my papers are turned in to my professors/two group projects are complete/two class presentations are presented. Something tells me that the Retail Hell of Christmas (which apparently arrived the week before Halloween this year) will birth a different kind of alcoholism in me.

I went out Friday night and immersed myself in slightly different crowd of people. I looked lovely, or so I heard, and flirted with ladies and men alike. It was refreshing and liberating and self-affirming. It's been two weeks since I've been officially single, and not once during that time have I had the opportunity to be at one with the single people in my life. I suppose last night was the closest I'll be coming for quite sometime. As soon as school lets go of my balls, I'll be out and about. Until then, you can find me here, in my newly rearranged bedroom, drinking strong coffee and red wine from behind a stack of books taller than my house.

Spring 2K7 Schedule [Oct. 26th, 2006|04:06 pm]

[Current Location |Im bett]
[Current Mood | pleased]
[Current Music |Girl Talk - Too Deep]

It's everyone's favorite time of the year: registring for next semester's classes! There are a few things to address about next semester, but for brevity's sake:

MWF 12.20 - 1.15: Deutsch 202
MWF 1.25 - 2.15: English 376, Colloquialism in Literature

TH 12.40 - 1.55: Sociology 321, Sociological Theories
TH 2.10 - 3.25: English 360, Technical & Professional Writing
TH 3.40 - 4.55: English 483, Children's Literature (soooooo excited)
TH 5.05 - 6.20: Communication Studies 240, Business & Professional Responsibility

18 hours seems like an awful lot, but I think I can manage. Deutsche Klasse will sehr leicht sein, weil will ich gleichen Lerher haben. English 376 will average together with my previous grade of F for an C (and since it's in my major, this is pretty important to take care of). Comm. Studies 240 is a much better alternative than Comm. Studies 210 (Publich Speaking). Dr. Billone teaches 483, and this is my one "fun" class for the semester.

If necessary, I may have to opt-out of my planned Sociology major in order to satisfy remaining Social Science requirements in order to graduate. Once the Registar finishes revamping my Degree Audit Report (Monday, they say, but I doubt it) then I'll be able to see exactly what I need to do to get the hell out of Knoxville before 2008.

And how are you all?

I very rarely write when I have good news. Eric and I broke up this weekend, and it's pretty weak. I can't wait until Fall Break so I can go to sleep for hours and hours. There will be neither tests nor papers there. Unfortunately, my house will still be cold without him and I'll still be upset with myself for the way things turned out. Such a fucking shame.

[Current Music |The wind whipping so autumnally through the trees]

It is Autumn, or rather, 4 days shy of Autumn, and it couldn't be any more perfect outside if it tried. Riding my bicycle and listening to Belle & Sebastian and looking at the big, gorgeous sky makes every trip to school a joy and yes, I'll say it, a fucking blessing.

School is picking up, finally. It was two weeks into school before I even wrote a sentence in German (we have the new guy in the department as our teacher), but now, oh now, I have an avalanche of work. Four papers and three tests within a two week period... it's a good thing that I never get too terribly stressed about school. I figure that I've been doing this academic thing for the past eighteen years, so even if I don't try, things will get themselves done somehow. They always have, and based upon that, they always will. It's really magical how my scholastic endeavours come to fruition, but I'm going to stop talking about this in lieu of speaking of more interesting matters (also: I might jinx myself [nogood]).

Boyfriend is starting the journey of quitting smoking, so I bought him a new nano to encourage his running-instead-of-smoking routine. Luckily, I get to play with it, too! They are really super neat, and I can't wait to see what Apple comes out with next (no; I don't know; stop asking me).

I got all my hair chopped off and it is rather unfortunate looking, so I'm going to use some of my scholarship money to get a really sweet dye job. I also got my tattoos touched up today and will finally be finishing my leaves next Tuesday. The stars on my hip, my first tattoo, look unreasonably professional. I will most certainly be posting some photos, be it here, MySpace or Facebook, of both my tattoos and new hair (later next week).

Well, my terribly boring Prehistory of North America class just came to a close. I thought I would take the opportunity to let all you fine people know that yes, I am still alive, but no, I do not have internet at my apartment yet. What I do have, which I will mention briefly because Eric is en route to take me to buy salmon, is a new kitten at my apartment named Scraggles. Ah, the joys of motherhood.

My Chaucer paper was due yesterday but I'm turning it in today at 2 p.m. when I take my final for that class. Thursday holds my German exam, and Friday marks my last foray into the world of paleontological Dinoz.

Today I have the second-to-last of my tattoo appointments for my leaves. Wednesday is sure to be raucous. Friday I'm going back to Nashville for Cinco de Mayo/to find a fucking job, plz.

There is good mixed in with the bad. I am also slowly realizing that the Miracle Year mainfests itself in such strange ways (here we come). I'm anxious to be out of this town and in the arms of a city I love.

Click on the ones you think I would look spunkiest with too look at real-life shots. Leave a comment with suggestions on what I should do to my hair.

Article 2) I finally have access to the REAL internet. I can finally catch up on what's happened in the past seven months in music (not much has happened, as far as I can tell). If you all would be so kind to leave a few artists/songs/albums I should download.

Article 3) Who took my goddamn Joanna Newsom CD? Also, who stole my rod (the one that used to be in my leg)?

7 Songs Meme [Feb. 1st, 2006|11:40 am]
[Tags|]
[Current Mood | silly]
[Current Music |Talking Heads - Girlfriend Is Better]

This comes courtesy of that dashing young Canuck, [info]howendingsbegin. I hope you all enjoy my superior list of jams.

SEVEN SONGS:
In your LJ, list seven songs you are into right now; no matter the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're any good. They must be songs you're really enjoying this week. When you're done, tag seven people on your friends list to see what they're listening to.

1) The Smiths - "I Started Something I Couldn't Finish"
2) The Cure - "Close to You"
3) The Decemberists - "On the Bus Mall"
4) Patrick Wolf - "Paris"
5) Bright Eyes - "June on the West Coast"
6) Belle & Sebastian - "If She Wants Me"
7) Joy Division - "Digital"

AND AN EXTRA ONE FOR FLAVOR

8) Chonger - "French Toast Raisin Bread" (aka "What Your Favorite French Toast?")

I tag the following fools (whether or not they do it is highly unlikely): [info]_sexplusglue, [info]cheesesandwich, [info]el_baile, [info]uncorrupted84, [info]itsmichaeldavis, [info]allhisengines, and [info]plexi. Do it to it.

ALSO! I am quite reluctant to admit that I am forced by the law of my musical disposition to attend Bonnaroo this year. Radiohead, Bright Eyes, Beck, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Tom Petty... I mean, these are the tenets upon which my musical prowess rests. Who am I to judge if they want to spend three days in the mud with a bunch of fuck-os who absolutely do not appreciate their genius. I'll just have to strap on my hippie sandals.

I'm really upset about having to go to Bonnaroo. Really fucking upset.

[Current Mood | hung upon a wall]
[Current Music |The Smiths - I Started Something I Couldn't Finish]

I am actively trying to rid myself of extraneous personal physical possessions. Tonight I began the most arduous task of delving through my mountains of photographs and greeting cards. A number of fucking righteous things happened when I dug through the box of greeting cards.

1. I found the lilac tissue paper that once embraced the first (and perhaps only) bouquet of roses I received (given to me by none other than Will Coleman--the tissue paper matched the blanket on which we had a picnic of homemade Japanese food [except for the salad--he went to Miyoto's and had a car wreck {minor} as a result] on the top of a hill in Johnson City where Hunter Johnson's house now stands--the most romantic man in the world).

2. I found love letters circa 1998. I am going to make it my new life mission to find Chris Cook from Space Academy. He loved me before any of you fuckers.

3. $45 cash inside an old graduation card from high school (!!!).

4. Letters from dead friends.

This whole "cleaning out my life" is going to be pretty incredible.

My hair looks better now, by the way. And I didn't even do anything to it! What a weird day.
